Laenye Productions is a live theatre production company that has operated in Tāmaki Makaurau since 2021. Our kaupapa is about creating spaces for migrants to create and tell their stories with a large number of our projects focusing on Latinx migrants’ stories.
We believe our traditional ways of telling stories are something to be proud of, and although we use this heritage when generating our projects we are also interested in bending, breaking, blending, and re-constructing forms to create something new and unique.
We believe every artist in Tāmaki Makaurau should be able to make art in their own language and that Kiwis of all backgrounds should be exposed to the stories and traditions of the cultures they share a home with, for which our work is never in just one language.
"La Catrina" is a magical realism production that explores the themes of life, death, and the uncertain in-between. It follows the story of three individuals who are unsure if they belong to the realm of the living or the dead, and their journey of self-discovery as they are confronted by the mysterious figure of La Catrina.
Spanglish Comedy is a stand-up comedy show that celebrates the Spanish-speaking community in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Since its inception in 2016, this primarily Spanish-language show has brought together Spanish-speaking performers and audiences, creating a vibrant atmosphere of humor and laughter across various stages in the city. 2024 marks its fifth consecutive participation in the NZ International Comedy Festival.
Open Mic (Comedia en Español) is a monthly stand-up open mic in Spanish, designed as a launching pad for Latinx comedy performers in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Held on the first Thursday of every month at Red Bar on Pitt Street, this event offers free entry and a welcoming space for emerging talent.
Better Than Tacos is a one-hour comedy show written and performed by China Gonzalez. It was the first hour-long comedy show in Aotearoa New Zealand to be performed in both English and Spanish. The show debuted at the NZ International Comedy Festival in 2021, followed by a season at the Basement Theatre that same year.
